These plants are best known for their ability to be made into an infusion which is commonly used to help with sleep and is often served with either honey or lemon. Because chamomile can cause uterine contractions which can lead to miscarriage, the U.S. National Institutes for Health says that pregnant and nursing mothers should not consume chamomile. Chrysin, a flavonoid found in chamomile, has been shown to be anxiolytic in rodents. Functions: 1. Antispasmodic: A preparation given to relieve intestinal cramping and relax the smooth muscles of the internal organs. Chamomile is used as an antispasmodic to relieve digestive disorders, menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), headache, and other stress-related disorders. 2. Anthelminthic: Chamomile has been used to expel parasitic worms from the digestive tract. 3. Carminative: Chamomile is given to help expel gas from the intestines. 4. Sedative: Perhaps the most frequent internal use of chamomile is in teas prepared to relieve anxiety and insomnia. 5. Anti-inflammatory: Roman chamomile has been used to soothe the discomfort of gingivitis (inflamed gums), earache, and arthritis. German chamomile is used in Europe to treat oral mucosities in cancer patients following chemotherapy treatment. 6. Antiseptic: Chamomile has mild antibacterial properties, and is sometimes used as a mouthwash or eyewash. It can be applied to compresses to treat bruises or small cuts. 7. It has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. 8. It has anti-inflammatory and is useful in allergic conditions. 9. It has anti-tumor properties and has potential to reduce the risk of cancer. 10.
